Tips For Natural Births

The term “natural birth” is somewhat outdated these days, it is used to refer to an unmedicated vaginal delivery. Many mamas choose this as an option whether they plan to give birth at a hospital, birth center, or home births. This type of childbirth certainly has its advantages. Besides preventing an increased risk to mother and baby as is associated with epidurals, natural childbirth allows mothers to experience the miracle of childbirth in a deeper and more meaningful way, whether that is a water-birth or more traditional. Additionally, recovery is smoother and quicker for moms that choose the natural route as women who skip the meds instinctively push, rather than exerting when they are told, which means less pushing and less tearing.

Natural childbirth and chiropractic care

Most women are able to achieve natural and unmedicated childbirth. Some women (about 15%) do have health conditions that may put them at a high-risk for this so it is always a good idea to check with a healthcare provider. If you are one of the many mamas that want to experience a more meaningful and healthy childbirth experience, below are some tips to help you on your journey!

#1 Know why

What does having a natural childbirth experience mean to you? Does it mean avoiding any intervention or simply without pain medication? There isn’t a right or wrong here, but knowing your why will help you make decisions later when you may not have the time or energy to be thinking this through. Every mama will have a different reason why, and you should define your reason.

#2 Be picky about your healthcare provider

You should do some research into the different healthcare options available to you for your childbirth. You will want to look at a midwife or doctor who believes in natural childbirth. Unfortunately, too often many doctors are quick to push medications and procedures on mothers during a time that is difficult to be making hard decisions.

You may want to also consider a doula, who really is there to help and cheer you on throughout the labor.

#3 Chiropractic care for natural childbirth

The cornerstone to natural healthcare, specifically for mothers-to-be, is chiropractic care. Chiropractic care can help to prepare your body for childbirth. It helps to improve emotional health, comfort, as well as promotes balance in the pelvis, which aids in bringing baby into the correct position for growing healthily and delivering.

The positioning of the baby is critical for delivery as an incorrect position can create a longer and potentially more complicated birth. The Webster Technique facilitates this positioning and allows baby ample room to grow. At TrueNorth, we are Webster certified.

#4 Start an exercise routine.

Like any strenuous exercise, childbirth requires energy and stamina. Being healthy increases your chances of being able to successfully deliver your baby without the use of medications/drugs. Simple exercises like walking outdoors or even using an elliptical machine or stationary bike go a long way in helping you achieve better health for you and baby. If you’re not used to doing cardio workouts, it is advisable to check with your physician before starting a rigorous exercise plan.

Additionally, flexibility is very helpful. This means stretching. Stretching is an important part of exercise and maintaining flexibility - especially in your hips. Prenatal yoga is one way that you can work on this. We personally love the Yoga Branch in North Branch, MN

An additional benefit of exercise is that it helps prevent gaining a bunch of pregnancy weight. This helps keep baby from getting too big, and remember, the bigger the baby, the more difficult your labor will be. Try combining an exercise routine with healthy eating habits for the greatest impact!
